A table lamp does more than simply add light. Choosing a Material and Style

Ceramic bases, including blue, white, sage and lemon glazes, work particularly well in classic, coastal and softly contemporary interiors. Glass and marble bring a cooler, more polished feel, while natural wood is an easy fit for relaxed, Scandinavian-inspired and rustic spaces.
Brass and gilt metal bases add warmth and a little more decoration, making them particularly effective on consoles, side tables and in rooms with darker walls where the finish can catch the light.
Beside the Bed, on a Desk or Console
A table lamp can serve very different purposes depending on where it is placed. Beside the bed, a shaded lamp provides a softer alternative to the main ceiling light and keeps the light close at hand. On a desk, a more directional design can give you useful light for reading or working.

Many of our table lamps come complete with their own shade, so the proportions and materials have already been considered together. The shade affects both the appearance of the lamp and the way the light spreads into the room.
If you're choosing a lamp base on its own, consider the size, shape and height of the shade you already have before ordering. A wider drum shade can balance a broader base, while a tapered shade often works well with taller or slimmer lamps.
